Easter Egg Pattern

These adorable eggs are quick and easy to knit. They use very little yarn which makes them a great stash buster project. Each finished egg measures about 2.5 inches long and about 6 inches around. They make great Easter basket stuffers, decorations, or toys. Enjoy!

Knitted Easter Eggs
By Emily Kintigh

Materials:

Small amount worsted weight yarn
US Size 3(3.25mm) DPNs
Yarn needle
Stitch marker
Stuffing

Abbreviations:

CO- Cast on.
K2tog- Knit two stitches together.
RLI- Right lifted increase. To work the RLI increase, lift right leg of the stitch below the next stitch up onto the left hand needle. Knit the lifted stitch and the stich that was above it to complete the increase.
DPN(s)- Double point needle(s).
K- Knit.
St(s)- Stitch(s).
Rnd(s)- Round(s).

Note: If you would rather work the KFB (knit in the front and back of the stitch) instead of the RLI (right lifted increase), simply replace all RLIs with KFBs. I prefer the RLI because it mirrors the K2tog decrease nicely.

More finished eggs in a basket, some striped and some solid.

This project is a great one to customize. I made most of my eggs in light pastel colors, but bright colors would look great as well. I even did some browns which could be chocolate eggs or natural eggs without dye. No matter what colors you choose, I hope you enjoy making these fun little eggs! Happy knitting!

  2. Could these be done on circular needles?

  3. Yes, they can be made with circulars if you are using one of the techniques for small circumference knitting. They could be made with a long circular using the Magic Loop method, or with two circulars.

Because the circumference of the knitting for this pattern is smaller than the circumference of any circular needles, it cannot be worked the way it is most common to knit on circulars with the stitches going all the way around the needle.

  4. Hi, I'm making one of these super cute eggs right now! When the pattern says to "tie in ends," what does that mean exactly? Like, weaving in the ends, pulling the ends to the inside of the egg, something else entirely...? Thanks for any guidance you can give :)

    1. I have the same question. Only thing I can think is if you cut yarn at every color change, you would have to weave them in at this point. I would just carry the yarn at the color changes. Make sense?

    2. When it says to "tie in ends" it means that this is when you should sew in any ends from color changes along with the cast on tail. This needs to be done before the egg is stuffed and finished, so it happens here. The yarn for the stripes should be carried up rather than cut each time, so there should just be two ends of the stripe color (the beginning and end of the stripes) along with the cast on tail to sew in.
      Happy knitting!

  5. Hi,
Yes, it is another way of saying weave in the ends. While sewing in the ends, make sure to close up the hole at the cast on edge and sew in the ends from the stripes so that there are no gaps in the fabric. All ends should be on the inside of the egg.
    Happy knitting!
